To be honest, I’ve always felt that being intimate with your partner while camping outdoors is something really special. It feels completely different from being at home. Everything is quiet, maybe there’s no one else within a few kilometers, and the air feels a bit intimate—and a bit exciting.

But because you’re outdoors, things are not that simple.

It’s not like in a bedroom where everything is already prepared. When you’re camping, there are actually quite a few things you need to think about—especially if you care about environmental safety and privacy. Things like bedding, wet wipes, and even simple ways to stay clean become really important. In some places, water sources aren’t convenient either. Sometimes you even have to walk a bit just to wash your hands, let alone take a shower. Also, that moment when you suddenly hear a sound outside the tent… it really wakes you up instantly.

Still, changing the environment really does bring a different feeling. Based on my experience from a few camping trips, here are some suggestions for camping lovers that I hope can help you.

Choosing a New Environment

A new environment brings a different kind of experience and gives you a different kind of challenge. It’s not an intentional change, but more naturally, you start to experience your partner in a different way. For example, in a tent, on the grass, or even just lying there looking at the stars—the sense of connection feels different. My partner once told me, “Even if you always prefer one sex position for camping sex, you’ll still experience a different kind of freshness in different campsites.”

Research Your Campsite

This might sound a bit boring, but it’s really important. Especially if you care about privacy or a sense of safety. Many campsites are actually public spaces, people aren’t very far apart, and sometimes you even have to share bathrooms. So I usually check the place in advance, like: whether it’s crowded, whether people have shared their experiences, and whether the overall environment is more open or more conservative. I personally have a habit of checking Reddit or forums to see what others say, especially people with similar backgrounds. Also, safety standards can vary by region, so it’s better to gather information from multiple sources.

Overall, coastal campsites in New England tend to be more inclusive—I’ve even seen quite a few same-sex couples there. Rural campsites are usually more conservative and may not be as welcoming.

Packing Checklist

When I first started camping, I was pretty “minimalist” and thought the less I bring, the better. Later I realized… I would always end up missing something important right when things were getting good. So now, when I go car camping, I basically follow this rule: if the car can fit it, I bring it. For example: a comfortable pad, softer bedding, things I usually use (bringing your favorite sex toys is also important—I like using low-noise small devices when camping).

Simply put: “If the car can carry it, just bring it. Camping doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, and it doesn’t have to be boring. You can enjoy sex while camping. You can use everything you use at home while camping. Just put it in the car and take it with you.”

Enjoy the fresh air of nature

Enjoy the fresh air of nature and blend in seamlessly with your surroundings. If you’re hiking or simply camping far from vehicles, you’ll need to be more careful about what you pack—including your choice of sex toys (maybe that bulky wand adds too much weight to your backpack, so you’ll want a lighter vibrator). This will make it easier to find a camping spot that works for both of you (without worrying that the vibrator’s noise will disturb other campers).

Of course, when it comes to the final question of “where to lie down” while camping, I’ve made some mistakes. At first, I thought an inflatable mattress was the way to go, so I brought one on my first camping sex adventure. But I quickly realized it wasn’t really suitable for situations involving a lot of movement. For example, it tends to wobble, can be noisy at times, and makes it hard to roll over. Later, I preferred using flatter mats or thicker sleeping pads. Even just a few yoga mats stacked together are much more stable than those wobbly air mattresses.

Tick Checks Can Be Sexy Too

Insects are part of nature, but for those of us who hate them, unfortunately, this means we have to check our bodies for ticks regularly. Sounds pretty annoying, right? But when you actually do it—checking your partner’s body inch by inch—it can turn into a very intimate interaction. Of course, the prerequisite is that if you find one, you have to deal with it first; otherwise, neither of you will be in the mood to continue.

Applying Sunscreen

Some everyday little things can actually feel different, like applying sunscreen. At home, it’s just a mundane task. But outdoors, when you help your partner apply it slowly, it takes on a different vibe—it’s like a great form of foreplay (caressing). Especially under the sun, that atmosphere makes people feel more relaxed. “If you take off all your clothes to make sure every spot gets covered, it’s even sexier.”

But with things like bug spray, you have to be careful not to get it in your mouth—otherwise, it really ruins the experience (having to walk 15 minutes to the nearest restroom to rinse your mouth is such a buzzkill).

Unexpected Hygiene Issues

Hygiene was something I really struggled to get used to at first. Honestly, this was one of the biggest things I wasn’t comfortable with in the beginning. After a full day, you’re sweaty, your clothes and shoes get covered in dirt, and to prevent mosquito bites you also apply a lot of repellent, which makes it hard to feel in the mood. But as long as you bring the essentials, you can still find ways to feel refreshed.

Later on, I started bringing wet wipes, and sometimes I also prepared simple cleaning methods. If conditions allow—like having access to water or even a simple rinse, or using a portable sitz bath—the experience is much better. But if not, you can also just accept that natural smell. It can feel a bit intense, but also very real and natural. Sometimes you realize that the smell on your partner actually comes from spending the whole day together.

There’s Nothing Sexier Than Sitting by a Campfire

Although building a campfire isn’t easy—my partner can confirm that—it’s almost always a really attractive experience. Sitting around a warm fire, roasting hot dogs or marshmallows, and talking under the stars feels both cozy and intimate. After a full day of hiking in the sun, this is often the best part of my camping experience.

“This light is really nice,” my partner would say, pointing at the familiar glow of the campfire. “You can bring a few candles and put them on the picnic table. Having a picnic dinner and getting intimate by the fire is always my favorite. You don’t have to go straight into the tent—because starting foreplay inside the tent can be a bit difficult.”

Learn to Be Comfortable With Nature Before You Start

If it’s your first time camping, you don’t need to aim for perfection right away. It’s more important to get used to the environment first. For example, getting comfortable sleeping outdoors or adapting to a less convenient lifestyle will increase your comfort level for your first camping experience.

Camping is very different from city life. It brings a lot of logistical challenges, mental adjustments, and anxiety. For some people, having sex in this state may not feel ideal, so it’s important to make sure you feel comfortable. And when you don’t, remember to stop.
